Opportunity Day in Annapolis

Join your colleagues and friends—preservationists, museum staff and volunteers, archaeologists, and other champions of Maryland’s history and culture—for an opportunity to become an effective advocate for Maryland’s rich historical and cultural legacy.

This afternoon event will assist you in becoming a comfortable and effective representative of the museum and preservation communities.  The ninety minute program will outline State funding programs and provide you with techniques for communicating effectively with legislators and their staffs.  Mark your calendar for January 31, 2012 from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Governor Calvert House, 58 State Circle, Annapolis.

To RSVP, go to:

Immediately following this afternoon program the Maryland Historical Trust Board of Trustees will honor your colleagues with their annual Preservation Awards.  The ceremony will take place at the Governor Calvert House Ballroom at 4:30 p.m. followed by a reception in the Atrium at 6 p.m.  We invite you to spend your afternoon learning important skills to advocate for Maryland’s historical and cultural community and later in the day honoring those who have been effective in preserving and protecting Maryland’s past. The Preservation Awards event is free and open to the public but advance registration is required.  To RSVP, go to:

It's Not Too Late to Join the Campaign to Restore Funding of MHT's Museum Assistance Program:

Find your legislators, go to:

“Contact” gets you an alphabetical list of legislators with their contact information.  “Find” button allows you to type in your address and zip code to identify your state senator and delegates.  If you “click” on their names, all their contact information appears.  Copy this information and send it to your membership and community supporters with this message for delivery on November 8th.

“Please work with Maryland’s heritage community by funding the Maryland Historical Trust’s Museum Assistance Program in the amount of $500,000.  These funds are matched by non-state funds and serve as important seed money for museum activities which support educational and tourist initiatives in the State.   (INSERT A SENTENCE OR TWO INDICATING HOW YOUR INSTITUTION HAS USED OR WOULD LIKE TO USE FUNDS FROM THE PROGRAM.)”

Make your phone calls and check with others to encourage them to make their calls.  Motivating the legislature requires a true barrage delivering a consistent message.

Keep MAHM Advocacy Committee Chair Ken Rucker informed of your contacts.
