Maryland has a strong historical connection to the world of aviation, and the state is home to several aviation museums. Below, we will take a look at a few of them.

Hagerstown Aviation Museum

The Hagerstown Aviation Museum is located at the Hagerstown Regional Airport in Hagerstown, Maryland. The focus of this museum is the Fairchild Aircraft Corporation. Founded in New York in 1924, the corporation was based in Hagerstown from 1931 and aircraft production continued there until 1984.

The Hagerstown Aviation Museum was established in 2005, and moved to the former Fairchild Aircraft Flight Test Hangar in 2020

In addition to the aircraft on display (see below), the museum also has a Fairchild F-27F 33 and a Fairchild C-123K Provider 54-0592 in storage.

Massey Air Museum

Established in 2001, the Massey Air Museum is found at the Massey Aerodrome near the community Massey in Kent County. The museum is focused on the aviation heritage of both Maryland and nearby Delaware, especially tail wheel aircraft.

Among other things, the museum collection contains a static Douglas DC-3, over 20 flying aeroplanes, 11 gliders, and a rotating beacon tower. There is also a working windmill on the premises.

Patuxent River Naval Air Museum

Located in Lexington Park, the Patuxent River Naval Air Museum preserves the heritage of the Patuxent River Naval Air Base, and nearby stations such as Warminster, PA, and Trenton, NJ. which have been consolidated at Patuxent River. There is a strong focus on Naval aviation research, development and testing.

The Naval Air Test and Evaluation Museum (NATEM) Association was established in Maryland in 1975, and the Navy provided a museum building and grounds in 1976. In July 1978, the museum opened to the public, and before the year was over it had been recognized by the Secretary of the Navy as one of the ten official Navy museums.

The Patuxent River Naval Air Museum opened a new building in 2016 and a new collections management facility in 2018.
